• Registration for all classes is by appointment only. Please call 978 681-9407 to schedule a time to come to the school to begin registration and orientation to the program. 
• Class schedules are subject to change in accordance with approved safety protocols.
• Classes are scheduled to begin in September on a hybrid model, with orientation for each class in small groups onsite, and structured remote learning provided weekly for the duration of the school year.

From Route 93:
Take Rte. 93N or 93S to Exit 48 (Rte. 213).
Follow Rte. 213 to Exit 3 (Pleasant Street).
At end of off ramp turn left (and get over to the right) at stop light (approximately 200 feet from end of ramp) turn right onto Jackson Street.
Go through 1 set of lights at the 2nd set of lights take a left (Swan St.)
At the top of the hill there is another set of lights (Prospect St./Swan St.) go through the lights and take your 2nd right (Vermont St.).
When you turn right on to Vermont St. you will see the school mid way up the road on the left side.
Please come around to the back door and ring the bell.

From Route 495:
Take Rte. 495N or 495S to Exit 47 (Rte. 213).
Follow Rte. 213 to Exit 3 (Howe St. /Pleasant St.).
At end of off ramp turn right go through two sets of lights (one right after the other). The street has now turned into Jackson Street.

ABE stands for Adult Basic Education. ABE is an umbrella term used to describe a range of educational services for adults including basic literacy (including English language skills for non-native speakers of English), mathematics and numeracy, digital literacy, civics, and Adult Secondary Education (preparation for the HiSET and GED tests to obtain the high school equivalency diploma).


What is Distance Learning?

Distance Learning is designed for adult education students who enjoy working independently and are motivated to learn language and
numeracy skills outside of a traditional, face-to-face classroom model. In 2020-2021, all classes will be conducted with Distance Learning.


History
The Methuen Adult Learning Center is beginning its 31st year and serves over 200 students annually. Students enrolled in the program in 2019-2020 came from 30 different countries, and 19 languages were represented. The classes are FREE of charge and are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen. 

The Center offers classes on a morning and evening schedule with multiple levels of English to Speakers of Other Languages. HiSET/GED preparation classes are offered on a morning schedule. Although registration is on-going throughout the school year, it is advisable to complete a registration form as soon as possible to secure a seat in class. Registration takes place at the Center Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm for morning classes, and Monday-Wednesday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for evening classes, by appointment only at this time.


Collaborations
The Methuen Adult Learning Center collaborates with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts at the Nevins Memorial Library to provide tutoring for students waiting to enter the program or who may have scheduling conflicts due to work, childcare or transportation issues. The tutoring program allows students the option to begin their studies without delay and to enter our program at a future date. Students co-enrolled at the Center and the tutoring program benefit from the opportunity to accelerate their learning. 

MassHire Merrimack Valley partners with the Adult Learning Center to ensure that students are employment ready. Students become active members of the One-Stop Career Center to develop their job search, resume-building and interviewing skills.

The Methuen Adult Learning Center partners with Middlesex Community College and Northern Essex Community College to ensure that HiSET/GED graduates and ESOL students at the advanced levels have access to higher education through Transitions and Bridge to College
as well as Integrated Education and Training programming, providing students access to a career pathway.

The Methuen Adult Learning Center hosts quarterly meetings of the Methuen Community Network to engage a wide variety of local agencies representing providers of education, employment, and social services to continue to share resources leading students to their next steps. Community collaborations support family literacy and provide services to area residents in reaching their education and employment goals.
